Water of Elephants

Water for Elephants is based on a historical novel by Sara Gruen; it was a best seller & the movie has been directed by Francis Lawrence. The story is set in a period just before the Great Depression & it revolves around the character of a young man named Jacob. However, the story is narrated by a 93 year old Jacob who looks back on his life.

Academy award winner actress Reese Witherspoon will be the leading lady of Water for Elephants. Moreover, Robert Pattinson will be seen as Jacob & they are saying it’s a very different kind of role. He really cares about animals. Christoph Waltz is another academy award winner actor who will be playing a significant role.

A young veterinary student faces a tragic experience just before his final exam which is sudden death of his parents due to an accident. Distraught he wanders around until he finds employment in a traveling circus where it becomes his duty to tend to animals. Here he comes across all sorts of people. The head trainer, August abuses not just animals in his care, but also people around him. Jacob falls in love with his wife Marlena. Several workers also released animals & that caused the stampede in which another villainous character Uncle Al dies. This is bit of a desi touch. However Marlena & Jacob leave along with some circus animals. They get married & have 5 kids. Jacob also gets a job as a vet in some zoo.

It surely sounds like a good movie with a neat plot. Of course it’s a bit sentimental & desi. Since animals are there in the movie, I’m sure it can’t be that bad.

By the way, I read somewhere that Robert Pattinson doesn’t like to take bath for days & naturally he sounds like a very smelly guy. In fact, often on the set he asks people to make his hair look better, cause he hasn’t washed them for days. I really liked his cute face till I read this.

Water for Elephants will be released on 22nd April.

Say no to animal abuse

"There is something so very dreadful, so satanic in tormenting those who have never harmed us, and who cannot defend themselves, who are utterly in our power, who have weapons neither of offense nor defense, that none but very hardened persons can endure the thought of it"

Cardinal Newman

NEVADA PREDATOR CONTROL PROGRAM HARMS WILD HORSES AND BURROS

Each year, the federal government kills over 100,000 native carnivores, including mountain lions, coyotes, bears and wolves, for the benefit of private livestock producers. Kill methods include aerial hunting, trapping, snaring and poisoning. The program is another form of”welfare ranching," which also allows commercial producers to graze livestock on public lands at below-market rates.

A classic example of government waste, the federal predator control program spends far more to kill native carnivores than the actual value of the damage they cause.

Citizens concerned about wild horses and wildlife have an opportunity to voice opposition to this wasteful, destructive and inhumane federal program. The USDA is accepting comments on an Environmental Assessment for Predator Damage Management in Nevada. The predator-killing efforts in Nevada focus on 19.6 million acres of BLM land, including Herd Management Areas, which are utilized extensively for livestock grazing at the expense of wild horses and burros.

Please take a moment to personalize and submit the sample letter below to comment on this damaging and wasteful federal program in Nevada.

Ban Gin Traps

GIN TRAPS– horrible, mechanical devices, designed to grasp an animal by the leg using spring-operated metal jaws. In their desperation to escape the pain and terror of being trapped, the captured animal will sometimes bite off the limb that has been caught. The use of gin traps has been illegal in the UK since 1958 and is banned in 90 other countries around the world.

The Government of South Africa is now proposing new legislation which appears to have re-named Gin Traps as ‘Soft Traps’ – a totally misleading name for such a nasty, cruel device. The legislation, if approved, will permit the continued use of these soft traps.

There is ample scientific evidence to show that even if an innocent animal survives the trapping, it often ends up with damaged tendons or ligaments in its efforts to escape. Trapped animals still suffer from torsion injuries, fractures, soft tissue damage and other limb injuries. Innocent animals caught by mistake often have to be euthanized as a result.

Making a difference in an animal’s life!

This petition consists of three parts:

1. Ban all kill shelters in Michigan

2. Change the state law (city ordinance) on number of dogs allowed in a home

3. Lower the price of adopting animals from shelters.

WE NEED TO WORK TOGETHER TO BAN ALL KILL SHELTERS.
These animals have the right to live.
What gives us the right to take their lives from them?
It’s not their fault that there are irresponsible humans in this world, so
why should they have to pay the price with their lives.

Which brings me to the 2nd part of my petition:

THE STATE LAW NEEDS TO BE CHANGED AS TO HOW MANY ANIMALS YOU CAN OWN.
Right now, the number of dogs you may own is 3, it ought to be changed,
so that more people could provide homes to these animals.

This is the link of the petition. We need 1000 people to sign it & only 17 have signed it so far. Please show some enthusiasm & take out a minute & sign it. Thank you!

"Lions" Beautiful Wallpapers

The lion, tawny to sandy brown in colour, is the largest of the African. Lions live a lazy lifestyle, typically active for only two to four hours in every 24. The lion is the second largest cat after the tiger. A male lion will weigh about 250 kilos and the females will weigh about 180 kilos. females give birth to litters of up to six cubs (usually one to four). Male African lions can grow up to 9' in length. Another characteristic of lions is that not only are adult males considerably larger than females (adult males 415 lbs., females 277 lbs.), they possess manes. The male's chief role in the pride is to defend territory and the females from other males. Lions have been celebrated throughout history for their courage and strength. After the hunt, the group effort often degenerates to squabbling over the sharing of the kill, Lions are the most social of the cat family. The female normally does all the hunting, usually at night, late afternoon or early morning. At a kill.
